Peer Support Community Partners: Transforming Grief Support

At Peer Support Community Partners (PSCP), we are a dedicated group of individuals with lived experience in grief and loss. We are committed to changing how grief is perceived and supported in the United States. We envision a world where conversations about grief are open, and support is easily accessible to everyone. Our mission is to integrate peer grief support as a fundamental practice in every community's response to those mourning the loss of a loved one.

PSCP specializes in building, developing, and supporting peer grief support systems at organizational and state levels. By partnering with governments and organizations, we create and implement comprehensive peer support programs rooted in our RIVER model: Relate, Invite, Validate, Empower, and Reassure. These programs are designed with best practices in mind, including participant-led program design, where those we serve have meaningful roles in development and implementation.

Our approach includes integral community-building processes and activities that help establish and strengthen a sense of community among bereaved individuals, empowering them to support one another. Our trauma-informed practices ensure that programs account for participants' possible trauma exposure, avoid re-traumatization, and provide referrals when necessary.

PSCP's methodology is centered on person-centered care, recognizing each participant as an individual with unique needs and experiences. We emphasize cultural humility, understanding that each peer brings their cultural identities and beliefs to their grief experience. Respect and openness are paramount in our peer grief support process. Additionally, we incorporate supportive self-care, resilience, and healing practices into our training and activities for peer helpers and participants.

Our programs, policies, and systems are peer-based, trauma-informed, non-directive, and non-pathologizing, designed to be integrated into existing systems. Whether at an organizational or state level, our goal is to create a supportive environment where everyone feels understood and valued in their grief.
